Dal Lake is Srinagar's largest lake. It is divided in four parts by causeways known as Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal and Nagin. Most of the modern houseboats are located on the lake, followed by the Nagin and the Jhelum.
Lake is the mobile shops of moving shikaras. Houseboats in the Dal are of all categories, from deluxe through to D class. The fascination for houseboats led to the creation of a large number of luxurious floating hotels.
The Dal Lake shrunk to half its size, from 22 sq. km. to about 11 sq. km in 50 years, and is a reminder of the degradation in the Himalayan tourism lake eco-system.
